Fred Again.. An Intimate Show of 30,000

Fred again.. brought his Actual Life universe to the Gold Coast with a massive outdoor show at Doug Jennings Park. For an artist who has made a career out of turning personal voice notes and scraps of everyday life into global dance anthems, the venue was an interesting choice: an open park at the tip of the Spit, surrounded by water and wide open skies – advertised as a ‘surprise location’, fans including myself were amazed to learn that there were a whopping 30,000 people in attendance.
The night opened with an act that perfectly leaned into mood and energy - Joy Anonymous warmed the crowd with their communal, hands-in-the-air vibe, the kind of set that feels less like a performance and more like a collective exhale. The set worked its way towards a sharper, more club-focused approach, so that by the end the crowd were warmed and ready to dance.

Fred kept the focus on the music from the moment he stepped on stage. No big entrance, no theatrics just straight into it with a stage full of friends and fans who had received VIP access from attending other pop-up shows. Across two hours he built a set that blurred the line between DJ, producer, and live performer. He moved constantly between pads and keys, looping and layering while the most insane laser lights moved to the beats.
The setlist pulled from across his catalogue: Danielle (smile on my face), Delilah (pull me out of this), leavemealone, places to be, ten and Rumble all landed with force. The biggest reaction came during Adore You when the crowd’s singalong could surely be heard from Brisbane. Fred ended on Billie (loving arms), arms outstretched, thanking the crowd.

The Gold Coast crowd was all in from the start. Doug Jennings Park proved a surprisingly good venue. Phones were out, sure, but not in a detached way; people were documenting moments they wanted to remember.
Compared to most electronic shows I’ve seen, it was obvious to me that Fred’s strength is connection. It didn’t just feel like a DJ set beamed at an audience; it felt like a shared moment he was building with them.

Fred continues his tour later this month, at Qudos Bank Arena, with no doubt more surprise shows will be added, so keep an eye out – you won’t want to miss this.
